Seventeen percent of the adult population suffers from neck pain and discomfort at any given time. This is often caused by poor posture, working at a desk for too long without changing position, sleeping with your neck in a bad position, wrenching your neck during exercise, or even just unanticipated sudden movement. Injury can also be a common cause of neck pain since the neck is particularly vulnerable to injury from traumatic movement, especially in falls, car accidents, and sports, where muscles and ligaments of the neck are forced to move outside of their normal range. Sometimes neck pain is an indication of other underlying health conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia.
